COLLECTING 1900 MODERN

Each generation defines what is modern for itself. ‘Modern’ is often a combination of reaction and rejection of what has immediately preceded it and the re-interpretation of formulas of a previous era to counter what has become familiar and conservative.
For the quarter century between 1890 and the First World War, artists, architects, and artisans generated a body of work that departed from historic precedents and was inspired, instead, by nature, geometry, and national pride. Participants in the British Arts and Crafts Movement, Continental Art Nouveau and Jugendstil, and the Austrian and German Secession actively promoted new philosophies about art, design, and production.
In this program, Lawrence Kreisman will talk about this remarkable period of design reform with examples from the personal collection of c. 1900 furniture and decorative arts he maintained with his late husband, Wayne Dodge, showcased in the 2015 Frye Art Museum’s exhibition: 1900: Adornment for the Home and the Body, and in the 2020 Cascadia Art Museum exhibition, Northwest Collects. Lawrence Kreisman, Hon. AIA Seattle, was Program Director of Historic Seattle for 20 years and Director of the Seattle Architecture Foundation tour program from 1990-2003. He has been recognized for significant work in bringing public attention to design history, the Northwest’s architectural heritage, and its preservation through courses, tours, exhibitions, lectures, articles, and 12 books.

Smithsonian American Art Museum
David Martin, curator at Cascadia, discussed his work recovering histories of Asian American Artists of the Pacific Northwest as part of a panel discussion at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) on March 14, 2025. The program, Rediscovering Asian American Art Panel Conversation, brought together three scholars who have worked to illuminate the contributions of twentieth-century Asian American artists.

Martin is the leading authority on early Washington state art and artists. Many of the artists he has chosen to highlight are women, Japanese and Chinese Americans, gay, lesbian and other minorities who had established national and international reputations during the period 1890-1960.
