Washington state is consistently listed as one of the most literate regions in the country. This idea has never been lost on our regional artists. Our exhibition features a collection of works depicting books and the act of reading either as the main subject or hidden away in the periphery of the composition. The art dates from the early to mid-20th century and features artists Mabel Lisle Ducasse, Anne Kutka McCosh, Lauretta Sondag among several others.
- Anne Kutka McCosh (1902-1994), David Reading, circa 1938. Oil on canvas. Collection of Lindsey and Carolyn Echelbarger.
- Mabel Lisle Ducasse (1895-1976), Untitled, circa 1920’s. Oil on board. Collection of Elizabeth Selleck.
