John Carl Ely (1897-1929) began a promising national career incorporating a sophisticated blending of folk carving with modernist techniques when his life was cut short by accidental drowning at the age of 32.

This is the first solo exhibition of Ely’s work since 1930.  The collection consists primarily of sculpture and a few rare paintings from the family collection, displayed in the Walker Foundation Gallery.
